Abstract

The title substance, MAAF, consists mainly of neutral sugars esp. arabinose and galactose, the remainder being amino acids, including alanine, glutamic acid, meso-alpha, alpha 1-diaminopimelic acid and galactosamine. MAAF is prepd. by culturing the mycobacteria, washing with solvent until lipid-free, hydrogenating, washing the prodt. with a non-solvent for MAAF, and finally extracting the MAAF into water. This extract may be treated to opt. ppte. the MAAF.
