Abstract

Unsatd. hydrocarbons are selectively hydrogenated in presence of a catalyst contg. (A) an org. Ni deriv. and (B) a reducing agent, as in parent patent, using as (B) cpds. of formula AlR1R2R3 or LiR (where R1-3 are each H and for hydrocarbon gps. and R is a hydrocarbon gp.). Hydrogenation is carried out in presence of pyridine. (A) is pref. a carboxylate or acetyl-acetonate, and (B) is triethyl aluminium, or methyl or n-butyl lithium. The catalyst is pref. made by passing (B) into a mixt. of (A) and pyridine. The catalysts show high activity and selectivity for hydrogenation of acetylenic or olefinic hydrocarbons e.g. selective hydrogenation of cyclopentadiene to cyclopentene or cycloctadiene to cyclo-octene.
