Abstract

The sidewalls of the carcase protrude from both the tread cylinder and the rim beadings of the tyre and are flexbile. Before fitting, the axial distance between the rim beads is 0.6-0.9 of the width of the cylindrical tread, the belt being a little narrower than the tread and having the edges precoated with a section of high elasticity rubber to protect the carcase from damage by those edges. The rim of the wheel has side flanges spaced axially by 1-1.2 times the width of the tread; when inflated the beads are forced outwards against the rims so that the overall curvature of the side walls is reduced, the bulk of the convergence when uninflated being in the inner half of those walls.
