Abstract

Electric windings inside one or more of the withdrawal rolls of a continuous slab casting machine impart a circulating motion to the molten metal. Each inductor roll has a non-magentic outer casing, the same size as the other rolls, and a magnetic core that has circumferential or longitudinal channels in which the windings are placed. The rolls can be incorporated anywhere in the withdrawal roll setup, so that there is no loss of continuity of slab support, and no tendency for bulging of the surface, as can occur when a non-contacting coil is inserted between successive pairs of rolls. The micro-structure of the slab is improved.
