Abstract

Betuletol (B11) and 3-methylbetuletol (B6), two naturally occurring flavonoids are of formula (I): where R is H (B11) or Me (B6). The cpds. are cytolytic agents and are prepd. by acetone extraction of buds of the birch tree, Betula ermanii, then chromatography of the residue from the extract on a polyamide column. Both cpds. cause damage to growing KB carcinoma cells.
