Abstract

Vertical tubular element for confluent mass transfer operations in contacting columns, particularly absorption, humidification and direct heat exchange operations. High speed current of gas enters the bottom of the vertical contacting tube and entrains liquid from radial inlets, the two phases being first contacted vigorously in a turbulence zone, fitted with sets of angled baffles, and then passing to an upper separating zone where liquid is led along helical channels to run off through radial outlets. Advantages include very efficient contacting, smaller columns, improved gas flow with reduced pressure drop.
