Abstract

Particulate carbonaceous adsorbent (charcoal, bone black, other types of active carbon), contg. adsorbed org. matter is regenerated by high-energy irradiation (pref. gamma-rays) under O2 at a press. =2000 psi (pref. 50-2000 psi), pref. in the presence of an aq. phase. Impure water can be directly purified by passing it through a column filled with a carbonaceous adsorbent under oxygen, with gamma-irradiation. The use of carbonaceous adsorbent permits concn. of the impurities and hence reduces the surface to be irradiated, whereby the consumption of the radiation energy can be reduced. The carbonaceous adsorbent is not damaged by the irradiation. The method can be used in the prodn. of dyestuffs, paper, textiles, etc.
