N-haloimides (I) where X = hal, by a) equilibrating at =0 degree with 1.5-3.0 (pref. 2.0) equiv. of alkali or alkaline earth base, until ring opening is complete, b) acidifying to pH 5.5-7.0 (pref. 6.4-6.7) and heating rapidly to 30-40 degrees, to promote the exothermic rearrangement. (II) are intermediates for herbicides, perfumes, flavourings, and pharmaceuticals.
