Abstract

Sodium formate, anhyd. SO2 and an alkaline Na compsn. are reacted in aq. alcohol to produce anhyd. Na dithionite which is sepd. by filtration, washed with alcohol and recovered. The stripped mother liquor is treated with H2SO4 and after sepn. of the crystallised Na2SO4, is distilled to form two fractions the first comprising formate ester and anhyd. SO2 which is recycled to the reaction stage, and the second comprising alcohol, recycled to the reactor or used for the washing stage. Efficient recovery and re-use of unconverted reactants is achieved.
