Abstract
Tungsten wire is helically wound onto a mandrel made of a low melting steel alloy coated with copper or a copper alloy, annealed at a temp. high enough to melt the coating so that it flows over the filament. The wire is then cut to length and the mandrel etched away in nitric or sulphuric acid. Method prevents the introduction of undesirable impurities esp O2 and Fe into the W, forming weak areas.
