Abstract

Water vapour-permeable film-forming compsns., useful as leather substitutes, rain-wear, upholstery, coated fabrics and laminates, synthetic paper, porous non-woven textiles, consist of a polymixt. of (a) a hydrophilic thermoplastic polymer material contg. 10 - 60 wt. pts. of a homo- or co-polymer or graft copolymer of an unsatd. amide having the formula CH2=CR'CONR2R3 (I) (where R' is H or 4C alkyl, R2 and R3 are 4C alkyl), pref. N,N-di-methylacrylamide (I') and (b) a water-repellent polymer material, contg. 90 - 40 wt. pts. polymer such as a vinyl chloride polymer, polyurethane, polymethyl methacrylate, polyamide, polypropylene and/or polyester. Hydrophilic thermoplastic may be a copolymer of (I') with Bu acrylate or a polymerisable ester of a polyalkylene oxide, such as an acrylate, methacrylate or maleate semi-ester of polyalkylene oxides. Compsns. may also contain (i) 5 - 100 wt. pts. plasticiser for hydrophobic polymers, (ii) a reciprocal solvent for both polymers, (iii) a non-solvent with lower volatility than reciprocal solvent, for >=1 of polymers, and (iv) a blowing agent.
