Abstract

Dimerisation of unsatd. fatty acids and their derivs. pref. tall oil fatty acids, fatty acid esters, distilled tall oil, soya fatty acids, and soya bean oil and/or linoleic acids, is catalysed by 0.001-2 wt % of an S-contg. catalyst having the general formula: (HO)n-Aryl-(SH)y-Rm (I) (where n is integer 1-4, y is integer 1-3, R is a hydrocarbon gp. m is integer 0-4, and m + n + y = substitutable positions at aryl ring) or the general formula (where x is integer 1 to 3, R1 is H or a Q gp. and Q is Me, NH2, NO2, or halogen) pref. by heating, 1-16 hrs. at 200-300 degrees C. Products have a high dimer/trimer ratio and are useful for prodn. of polyamide adhesives, polyester coatings and corrosion protective agents.
