Abstract

1428831 Separation of aromatic carboxylic acids TEIJIN Ltd 18 May 1973 [20 May 1972 31 May 1972] 23946/73 Heading C2C Benzene ortho - polycarboxylic acids are separated from an aromatic carboxylic acid mixture by a process comprising heating a liquid composition containing at most 20% by weight of water and at least the following four components: (a) at least one benzene orthopolycarboxylic acid (i.e. a compound containing at least one benzene ring bearing at least two carboxylic groups in ortho-position to each other), (b) at least one aromatic carboxylic acid which is not a benzene ortho-polycarboxylic acid; (c) at least one aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having 2-4 carbon atoms, and (d) at least one carboxylate of cobalt or manganese which is soluble in component(c) at a temperature of at least 90‹ C. to form a precipitate containing cobalt and/or manganese complexes of the acid(s) in component (a) and isolating the precipitate. Component (a) above may contain, for example, at least one of o-phthalic acid, trimellitic acid, hemimellitic acid, 3-methylphthalic acid and 4-methylphthalic acid, Component (b) may contain, for example, at least one of benzoic acid, a toluic acid, a dimethylbenzoic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, a monomethylisophthalic acid, a monomethylterephthalic acid, trimesic acid, a naphthoic acid and a naphthalene dicarboxylin acid. The liquid composition used as starting material may be obtained by oxidation of at least one alkylbenzene or alkylnaphthalene. It may be obtained, for example, by oxidizing composition containing at least one of o-xylene, pseudocumene or a mono- or di-methylnaphthalene in component (c) as solvent and in the presence of a catalyst system containing at least one carboxylate of cobalt and/or manganese which is soluble in (c), or a cobalt and/or manganese compound which can form such a carboxylate under the reaction conditions, and separating from the oxidation reaction product the solid component containing solid aromatic carboxylic acids.
