Abstract

In the parent patent surface sizing of paper is effected by treating the paper with an aqs. soln. of a salt of a statistical copolymer of (I) 50-90wt.% 2-12C alpha-olefin, (II) 10-50wt.% (meth)acrylic acid, and (III) 0.1-30wt.% of another non-basic copolymerisable monomer. Now claimed is III as a semi-ester and/or semi-amide of a 3-5C monoolefinically unsatd. dicarboxylic acid and/or a monoolefinically unsatd. alcohol, and the copolymer has a K value of 20-45. Excellent sizing effect, good resistance to alkali, good compatibility with fillers are obtd.
