Abstract

Materials with antiviral activity are prepd. by reacting organic polymer poly-cations contng a number of quat. N-posns. interposed along the polymer chains, with either (a) poly (I): poly(C)-polyanions or (b) poly anions of a double stranded deriv. of poly(I)-poly(C); and bringing the product into a form suitable for medical use. Poly(I): poly(C) is the double-stranded complex of polyriboinosinic acid and polyribocytidylic acid. The complexes have board-spectrum antiviral activity against a large number of DNA- and RNA viruses. They are esp. useful in the prophylaxis of virus infections. They are less toxic than poly (I) poly(C) esp. when given i.p.
