Abstract
Equibinary (cis, 1,4-1,2) polybutadiene is made by -80 degrees C to +100 degrees C pref. -78 degrees C to +60 degrees C in inert atmos. in a non-aqs. media, in the presence of >=1 catalyst (1) prepd. from (a) a trialkyl aluminium, AlR3 in which R is a linear aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 1-6C and (b) a dialkoxy-molybdenum trichloride, MoCl3(OR')2 in which R' is a hydrocarbon radical of 1-6C the molar ratio a/b not being 6, pref. 6-30, or a catalyst (2) prepd. from (a') a dialkyl aluminium chloride, AlR2Cl, and (b') molybdenum acetyl-acetonate, the molar ratio of a'/b' not being 9 pref. 9-50, and the proportion of Mo being between 10-4 and 10-1 mole/mole of butadiene. The non-aqs. media is pref. aliphatic, alicyclic, halogenated or partic. aromatic hydrocarbon. The polymers have substantially equimolar proportions of cis-1,4 and 1,2 units. They have good mechanical props. and are used in the normal uses for rubber such as tyres, belts and hoses.
