Abstract

Pipe joint or sleeve with puncture sealing props. comprises a body of conventional material sized to fit the pipes to be joined but enclosing a cavity filled with a supple rubbery material. Pref. the rubber filling is enclosed between concentric sleeves, pref. is coloured to reveal its location within the joint body which is pref. translucent. Pref. the joint body is made of a natural or synthetic rubber or a plastic, pref. PVC, a polyamide a crosslinked silicone elastomer or cellulose acetate. Pref. the pliable rubber filler is a natural or synthetic rubber or blend or copolymer with a standard. Wallace softness of 20-40, pref. 28-32; a modulus at 200% extension of 1-1.5 kg/cm2 elongation to break >=2000%, a tensile strength of 1-15. kg/cm2 a resilience of about 25%. Pref. said rubbery filler is an unvulcanised silicone elastomer, a cpd. of polyisobutylene and polybutadiene or of polyisoprene and polybutadiene. Esp. claimed for joints in flexible tubers for medical infusions or transfusions or for the injection cell seals for gas phase chromatography.
