Abstract

The solid particles from a suspension are simply, cheaply, rapidly and efficiently sepd. and dispersed into a second liquid, by contacting the suspension and the second liquid to form an upper layer of the first liquid and a lower layer of the second. A boundary region is maintained in which the fluid media re at least partly miscible and the density of the second liquid is that of the first, whilst the densities of the liquid media are that of the solid particles. The lower layer (new suspension) is run off as necessary and the process worked continuously. The first liquid pref. contains an auxiliary sepg. agent, esp. polyacrylamide, and the second a surfactant. The process is suited for treatment of ammonia-soda process by-products.
