Abstract

Hollow glass sealed end tubes of low coefft. of thermal expansion are placed parallel and in contact with each other between glass end plates and clamped in a moulding frame between graphite moulding face plates, the mould is evacuated and heated until the glass softens, so that the tubes expand under the pressure of air inside the tubes against each other, welding themselves together to form hexagonal tubes, and welding to the end plates to form a strong lightweight structure after cooling. The assembly is cooled slowly through the annealing range.
