Abstract
Powder mixts. for growing single corundum crystals for use as artificial gems, and contg. 74-99 wt.% alpha-Al2O3, 0-6 wt.% colouring agent (esp. Cr, Fe, Ni, Ti, V or Co) and 1-20 wt.% AlF3, are made by heating Al(OH)3 and the colouring agent at 1100-1200 degrees C for about 2 hrs. After sieving, the AlF3 is well mixed in. Alternatively all three components can be heated together to give a higher yield of prod. but with less control of the crystal compsn. The mixt. is not hygroscopic and enables crystals to be grown at 8-12, mm/hr. with a wide range of isomorphic incorporation of colouring agents.
