Title cpd. is of formula (I): and it is prepd. by the catalytic hydrogenation of 3-nitro-5-CF3 acetophenone (II), which is itself prepd. by the reaction of 3-nitro-5-CF3 benzoyl chloride on the magnesium deriv. of diethyl malonate and ethanol, followed by hydrolysis and decarboxylation. In an example, 40 pts. (II) was hydrogenated in methanol in the presence of Raney Ni to give 80% yield of (I), m.pt. 100 degrees C.
