Abstract

Desalination, or even demineralisation, of brackish water is effected by dialysis in the conventional manner. The dialysis cell is formed by a series of compartments, some arranged on a dilution circuit and the others on a concentration circuit, the circuits being sepd. by semi-permeable membranes. In the new process, sea-water is circulated in the concentration compartments in an open circuit without re-cycling; the sea-water serves to assure the rinsing of the electrodes which create the electric field in the cell. In this way the conc. of certain harmful ions in the conc. circuit is avoided and the exchange membranes are not "poisoned"; i.e. their resistance is not increased nor is their selectivity diminished. The membranes are alternately anionic and cationic and the two outside compartments include respectively an anode and a cathode. The even rows of the compartments form the dilution circuit while the odd rows form the conc. circuit. Under the effect of the electric field the cations and the anions of the dilution circuit are extracted through the respective cationic and anionic membranes and pass into the adjacent conc. compartments.
