Abstract
The invention relates to the construction and operation of a seawater or brackish water desalination plant by means of membranes and direct current with energy recovery. One known method in seawater or brackish water desalination is the electrodialysis process. The product presented works in a similar way, but some of the electrical energy used is recovered, which reduces the total energy requirement. The product consists of at least 2 modules per part, each consisting of one chloride anions and one separating layer selectively permeable to sodium cations, arranged so as to form chambers or channels per module, as shown in Figure 1. The modules are electrically connected per part product. A DC power source is connected to the first part product and this part consumes DC while the second part product produces DC power. The product may be used to reduce salt concentration or desalination of sea water, brackish water or other salt solutions.

Stand der TechnikState of the art
Saltworks Technologies Inc. of Canada has developed a process consisting of the second process of seawater, seawater with excess chloride anion and seawater with sodium cation surplus divided into three pools connected by selectively permeable polystyrene bridges, the seawater in one basin the chloride anions and removes sodium cations without any power consumption, only with internal force.
Aufgabenstellungtask
The world's drinking water needs are enormous and rising, especially in regions that have very little groundwater, rainfall and freshwater natural waters. Here, when a sea connection is given, the seawater or brackish water desalination applies. However, the desalination carried out by means of selectively permeable membranes and direct current consumes enormous amounts of energy and becomes the less economical the higher the salt content of the starting solutions is.
The invention is therefore the object of being a way of seawater and brackish water desalination, which consumes less power than conventional systems.
According to the invention the object is achieved in the method of the type mentioned by the features indicated in the marked part of
The product according to the invention has the advantage that, on the one hand, the seawater or brackish water does not have to be completely desalinated in the first partial process, which saves energy. In addition, with the second sub-process even energy can be obtained in the form of direct current.
In the overall system, the power requirement for seawater or brackish water desalination is considerably reduced by the invention.

Allgemeine Beschreibunggeneral description
The reduction process of ions in solutions described herein refers to correlating ions, such as in seawater or brackish water where sodium cations and chloride anions are present in an aqueous solution.
The product consists of two subsystems, which have different functions in the deionization process and can be operated connected to each other in the flow principle or, even a subsystem, in a batch process. A subsystem, in turn, consists of at least two modules that have the same basic structure for both subsystems, but do not have to be identical.
The respective modules of a subsystem are either connected per subsystem in series and / or parallel electrically conductive or each previous module of the respective subsystems with each other shares with the subsequent module an electrically conductive, but not ion-permeable separation layer.
Each module consists of three channels or chambers through which the solution to be reduced by ions flows or is pumped. The outer walls of a module lying parallel to the channels or chambers are electrically conductive, waterproof and ion-impermeable, perpendicular to it standing outer walls, the floor and possibly used ceiling layers in chambers are not electrically conductive, waterproof and ion-impermeable. The resulting volume is now divided by two separating layers into three subregions. The first separation layer is electrically conductive and selectively permeable to the anions to be reduced, the second separation layer is electrically conductive and selectively permeable to the cations to be reduced. The resulting channels or chambers of the two subsystems are interconnected such that a channel or chamber in the first subsystem having contact with an anion selective permeable separation layer is connected in the second portion to the channel or chamber / which has contact with a cations selectively permeable separation layer, and vice versa. Only the channels or chambers, which are surrounded on both sides by selectively permeable separation layers, are again connected to the central channels or chambers in the second subsystem.
If the flow-through method is applied to the product, the flow direction, given by the connections of the two subsystems and the inflow of ion solution to be reduced, can take place in cocurrent and / or countercurrent.
During operation of the product, the solution whose ion concentration is to be reduced is introduced into all three channels or chambers of all modules in the first subsystem and applied to the electrically conductive modules a DC voltage. This first electrodialysis causes anions to migrate through the anion-permeable separation layer and migrate cations through the cation-permeable separation layer. As the ion concentration in the center channels or central chambers decreases, the concentration of the anions increases on one side of each module and the concentration of cations on the other side of each module. In the second subsystem, the separating layers of the modules through the ports are distributed in exactly the opposite way, so that migrate from the central channels or middle chambers anions through the anion permeable separating layers towards the solution with cation enrichment and so that from the central channels or middle chambers cations through the cation permeable separating layers towards the solution Anionenanreicherung wander. This generates a tappable DC voltage between the electrically connected modules of the second subsystem.
At the three outlets of the second subsystem, two channels or chambers each module emptied with an ionic concentrate and per module a channel or chamber with the Duliat, so reduced by anions and cations solution as the final product.
