Abstract

Modified thermoplastic polymers which are responsive to RF heating and can be thermoformed are produced by incorporating into polymers of dissipation factor 0.01 a 'polar domain' in the form of 0.2 - 20% of an acrylonitrile polymer of -CN content of which is 49% to 14 1/2%. On subejecting to RF heating the 'polar domain' acts as a thermal transducer conducting and radiating heat to the thermoplastic polymer. Suitable thermoplastic polymers include polyethylene, polyesters, polyurethanes, PVC, polystyrene and high impact polystyerene, polyamides, polysulphones, polyelectrolytes, polysiloxanes, polyfluorocarbons, cellulosic polymers, polyacetals, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers and ABS. The acrylontirile polymer is pref. polyacrylonitrile or butadiene/acrylontirile copolymers of 30 - 50% acrylonitrile content, wh ich may be incorporated into the thermoplastic polymer by hot compounding.
