Abstract

A heated knife suitable for cutting sheets or strips of heat sensitive material consists of a blade with a slit parallel to its edges and very near to them, dividing the blade into two branches each of which is connected to an electric supply. In the present improvement the blade has two parallel sides joined at a point by an arc of a circle tangential to one side and normal to the other. The branches are relatively wide beyond the opening so that heating is localised near the point. The operative part of the knife is relatively short and it can be easily fixed between plates without thickening the branches to avoid heating them. The device may be used to heat the edges of sheets and then bring them into contact for welding. Pref. for this the slit to be equidistant from the edges of the two branches.
