Abstract

Substd. aromatic cpds. of gen. formula, Y-R in which Y is an aromatic ring, R is an aromatic ring substd. by a methylene radical or a heterocyclic ring contg. a CH2 gp., are oxidised by O2 in air, in the presence of amineral base dissolved in an acyclic polyether which contains 5-40, pref. 8-20, recurring units, such as polypropylene oxide, propylene oxide-ethylene oxide copolymers, or polyethers of formula M-O(CH2-CH2-O)n CH2-CH2-OH in which m is alkyl or aryl. The process gives good yields with very limited amount of secondary products. Process is esp. for oxidising fluorene to fluorenone.
