Abstract

Two layers of thermoplastic film are welded together by clamping the film together and stabbing the zone between the clamps with a hot probe. Pref. the clamps comprise opposing metal tubes which are temp. controlled to heat or chill the clamped films coaxially about the zone to be stabbed by the hot probe. Esp. for welding the borders of a hole in a previously perforated film to a plain layer of film, i.e. to seal a hole made in a sachet by a needle used to inject the pack contents. Method forms a neat local weld with a similar degree of fusion on the inner faces of the weld as on the outer surfaces (in contrast to use of an external welding foot).
