Abstract

Welding tool has two opposing jaws which clamp and heat the weld zone. Each hot jaw is flanked by a pair of cooled jaws which can clamp each film adjacent to the weld zone, both during heating and after the hot jaws have been retracted to allow cooling of the weld zone. The tool is suitable for 'trans warp' machines for sealing liq., granulated or powdered matls. into bags or sachets made from tubular film. The ancillary clamps permit both deep fusion and unstressed cooling of the weld zone to ensure good bonding of the opposing surfaces despite possible surface contamination by the pack contents. Matl. flowing from between the hot centre jaws is contained by the ancillary jaws, forming a relatively thick section head. If both sets of jaws are released while the bead is still warm, local contraction occurs which results in a a relatively thick, strong weld zone.
