Abstract

Skis are moulded in a plastic material which incorporates a mat or array of relatively long filaments. Pref. the ski is made by injection moulding into a cavity pre-loaded with the insert filaments together with ancillary runners, end caps, sole plates, strap anchorages, etc. so that the injected resin acts as an adhesive-free matrix for all the insert components. Pref. the skis are moulded in polyurethane resin (having at least some of the resin expanded). The filaments may be of glass or metal or synthetic materials, as non-bonded mats or rovings. Prod. provides a higher stiffness/wt. ratio than moulded ski bodies without reinforcement or incorporating chopped fibres in the injection compsn. Injection moulding is faster and more reproducible than conventional manual fabrication.
