Abstract

Plants can be propagated vegetatively, and with high efficiency, by the stamens, anthers, or the bases of very young petals, sepals, or whole flowrs. The pieces are grown under sterile conditions, first (a) on a medium contng. nutrient salts, one or more phytoassimilatable sugars, auxins and quinines, at 20-25 degrees (day), 15 degrees (night) and in light up to 5,000 lux. until the plantlets develop then (b) pricking out onto a second medium contng. nutrient salts, and sugar (less than 'a'), to further root and leaf development, and (c) potting up in a clean medium e.g. vermiculite, perlite-peat or sterile soil, spraying with a nutrient salt soln., and protecting with a plastic bag.
