Abstract

Curable epoxy resin compsn. consists of a mixt. of (I) an epoxy cpd. contg. an average of more than one adjoining epoxy group per molecule, and (II) a reaction prod. produced by reacting (1) a reaction prod. by reacting (a) a phenol with >=1 reactive H atom bonded to the aromatic nucleus, (b) a polyamine with >=1 active H atom per molecule bonded to the amino N atom, and (c) a carbonyl cpd. with >=1 carbonyl gp. per molecule, the molar ratio of phenol (a): polyamine (b): carbonyl cpd. (c) being 1:>=1:>=1, and (2) a phenol, the equivalent ratio of phenolic hydroxyl gps. of phenol (2): unreacted amino groups of reaction pdt. (1) being between 0.1-1 and 1.0:1. The epoxy resin compsn. can be cured rapidly at low temps. such as 0-5 degrees C, to give cured resin with excellent physical properties. The compsns. have a good moisture resistance, and can be cured under extreme conditions, such as in water.
