Abstract

The smelting current between the consumable electrode and the furnace shell is supplied by a d.c. source based of rectifiers and by a supplementary reservoir of electrical energy e.g. a storage capacitor, the two being connected alternately with reversed polarity. The capacitor may be placed in the primary circuit of a transformer whose secondary is connected to the furnace, thyristors being used for switching and the capacitor being charged externally. The low loss characteristics of d.c. smelting are combined with freedom from polarization.
