Abstract

1330419 Valves; toothed gearing COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES PETROLES 6 Dec 1971 [11 Dec 1970] 56606/71 Headings F2Q and F2V In a control system for a valve, e.g. plug valve 2, Fig. 3, comprising an electric drive motor 19, transmission gearing 17, 18 and epicyclic gearing 16, 20, 21, 22, a safety mechanism 1 automatically operates the control system, preferably to close the valve, in the event of interruption of the electrical power supply. The mechanism 1 comprises a disc (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), normally held against the action of a compressed spring (4) by a latch 9, but automatically released by retraction of latch on failure of the power supply, whereby the disc is moved by the spring to move rod 5 and rotate planet carrier 14 in a direction resulting in valve closure until abutment 27 contacts switch and stop 24. On resumption of the power, supply lead 36 conveys a signal which causes control means 28 to rotate the motor 19 in the valve closure direction causing the disc (10) to return to its locked position behind latch 9 and to actuate a switch 38 to de-energize the motor. Thereafter energization of the motor for opening and closing the valve is controlled by knobs 29, 30. The safety mechanism may comprise two spring-biased discs (10) and rods 5, the latter being symmetrically connected to the planet carrier 14.
