Abstract

Frames delimiting area for flow between adjacent semipermeable membranes e.g. anionic and cationic in electro-dialysis cell, include sheets woven from pref. polythene fibre in square grille form to provide mechanical support for membranes. The fibres may be attached to sides of frames and have dia. half that of the frame thickness, so as to span the gap when woven. This support method does not significantly reduce available membrane surface, and fibres are not subject to flattening. Total width of separator should be between 0.5 and 1.5mm, to reduce current losses while avoiding blockages in electrolyte flow. A pile of such cells provides appts. suitable for purifying sea water.
