Abstract
Electrochemical ion exchange treatment of vitreous article esp. of glass ceramic in a molten salt bath in which (a) a negative lead is connected the glass-ceramic article, (b) the positive lead is connected to the salt bath (c) the article is placed in contact with the salt establishing at the surface a salt/glass ceramic/atmosphere tension such that the salt bath and the article constitute conductive elements (of a cell), (d) displacement of the salt bath or the article with respect to the other as to displace the meniscus in a predetermined manner on at least one part of the surface and (e) passage of a current across the salt into the glass ceramic to produce the can exchange in and across the glass ceramic.
