Abstract

Vulcanisation of mixts. of synthetic elastomers, vulcanising agents, and the usual additives, is effected by (a) partly vulcanising the mixt. at temps. and/or for periods less than those for complete vulcanisation to give pdts. having an elongation at break of 300-2000%, and a residual elongation 70% of their elongation at break, and (b) drawing the pdt. at a draw ratio corresponding to an elongation the percentage less than 10% of the elongation at break, and at the same time terminating the vulcanisation at a temp. equal to or different from that of stage (a) the elongation characteristics indicated for stage (a) being those existing at the temp. at which vulcanisation is terminated. Gives vulcanised pdts. e.g. sheets, threads, fibres, inner tubes, with a high tensile strength, low modulus of elasticity, and low residual elongation. Specif., the synthetic elastomer is an ethylene-propylene copolymer, EPDM terpolymer, styrene-butadiene copolymer, acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer of chlorosulphonated polyethylene.
