Abstract

Method for treating aqs. waste stream contg. a water-soluble sulphide cpd. comprises (a) contacting aq. waste stream and oxygen in an amount 0.5 mole O2/mole of sulphide cpd. contained in stream, with a first solid oxidising catalyst at relatively low pressure and temp. to form a first effluent stream contag. a water-soluble polysulphide; (b) contacting the first effluent stream and oxygen in an amount less than the amount utilised in step (a) with a second solid oxidising catalyst at temp. greater than m.pt. of sulphur and pressure sufficient to maintain at least a portion of the first effluent stream in liquid phase, to form a second effluent stream comprising a mixture of liquids and a treated aq. stream, and (c) separating the liquid S from the second effluent stream to produce a treated aq. stream which is free of sulphide.
