Abstract

High mol. wt. thermoplastic polycarbonate is based on aromatic dihydroxy cpds. and contains 0.2-0.00005% wt. alkali metal salt which is soluble in the molten polycarbonate. The polycarbonates have low flammability and unaltered physical properties. In particular, the polycarbonates do not become discoloured or crosslinked. When the polycarbonate is based on a haloaromatic dihydroxy cpd., it contains 0.1-0.005% wt. alkali metal salt, and when the polycarbonate is based on a non-haloaromatic dihydroxy cpd., it contains 0.001-0.0001% wt. alkali metal salt. The alkali metal salt is pref. potassium isooctanoate.
