Abstract

Rubbery hydrocarbon copolymers are made from (A) a major proportion of a cyclic mono-olefine having 5 or 7-10C in the ring, to which may be linked at 1-6C alkyl substit. but not nearer to the double bond than position 4; e.g. cyclopentene, and (B) a minor proportion of (1) a cyclic polyolefine having at least 2 C-C double bonds sepd. by a single C=C bond, or a condensed ring structure contg. at least one C-C double bond each of at least 2 rings, e.g. dicyclopentadiene, or (2) an omega-alkenyl-polycycloalkene, e.g. 2-vinyl bicyclo (2,2,1) heptene-5. The copolymer may be a terpolymer contg. (C) non-tertiary acyclic mono-or polyene with 2-30C e.g. 1-pentene. Polymerisation is in presence of an olefine disproportionating catalyst, pref. a cpd. of a metal of gp. VIB pref. Mo with an organo-aluminium halide. The rubbers have good properties and are used for making conveyor belts, tyre bodies and adhesives.
