Abstract

Water-soluble homopolymers or copolymers of methacrylic acid, in the solid form, are prepared by radical polymerisation of methacrylic acid, which may contain up to 10% of acyrlic acid, in the presence of 70 to 120 pts. of urea in 40 to 120 pts. of water for each 100 pts. of the acid. Up to 100 pts. of (meth)acrylamide per 100 pts. of the acid may also be added to the reaction mixtures. At the end of the polymerisation, the water is evaporated off at 100 degrees to 140 degrees C, at which, the initial water-insoluble rubbery mass is converted to a hard, friable, porous, water-solube product. The products are used for textile treatments and so thickening agents and polyelectrolytes.
