In an example, 293 mg. 71-chloro-31-oxo spiro-(cyclohexane-1,11-indane)-5-acetic acid was treated with 3 ml. ethylene glycol, 180 mg. KOH and 0.135 ml. hydrazine hydrate to give 85% yield of (I); X = Cl; R = H; n = 2.
