Abstract

Water-insoluble membranes consists of mutually connected, essentially spherical submicron polymer particles, the interstices between particles being below 0.1 mu. The polymer may be (crosslinked) polystyrene or PMMA. The membranes may be prepared by forcing a polymer emulsion onto a porous support so that the polymer particles are retained on one side thereof whilst the liquid emulsion medium is allowed to pass through the support. The membranes have good mech. strength and selectivity and throughput. Used in separation of materials contained in solns. according to mol. wt. and in chromatography, making use of migration rate differentials between various materials.
