Abstract

Semi-permeable membranes for passage of water and retention of dissolved impurities, comprising an osmotic skin of a polymeric film-forming material having very small passages, and a porous substrate, also of a film-forming polymeric material, contain particulate filler having particle diameter =0.15 m mu in weight ratio of filler:polymer = 1:50 to 1:1. Cellulose esters or ethers are suitable polymer, and SiO2 is suitable filler material. Membranes are used in desalination of water by reverse osmosis, they are stable in use and have high throughput over extended periods of time.
