Abstract

Animal or fish waste is ground coarsely to reduce large pieces and break up the viscera, stewed, compressed to remove excess liquid, dehydrated and powdered, the fat being recovered from the liquid, any solid particles being recycled. Process avoids the disadvantages of pressure cooking, with excessive volumes of liquid and of dry treatment, both involving a separate degreasing stage. The coarse disintegration is pref. in the cold and retains pieces 20-30 mm. thick. The pieces are cooked at 100 degrees C for 30-90 min. and then compressed at 50 degrees-100 degrees C. pref. in a helical screw device of conical shape or between calender rolls.
