Abstract

Vitreous matrix of 1-65 mol.% SiO2, 6-40 mol.% B2O3, 5-50 mol% BaO and 1-5 mol.% Al2O3 contains 0.0001-0.01 atom % incorporated Pt, in glass used for neutral optical fillers. Pref. glass contains, as additives, 0-21% SrO, 0-8% CaO, 0-5% MgO, 0-10% ZnO, 0-41% La2O3 and 0-13% ThO2 (all amts in mol.%) and pref. also 0-5 mol.% alkali metal oxides, e.g. Na2O and/or K2O (to accelerate melting) and 0-2 mol. % TiO2 and/or 0-3 mol.% ZrO2 (stabilisers).
