Abstract

Solns. comprise (a) >=1 water-soln. antibiotic; (b) a water-sol. corticosteroid and (c) a solvent-forming base, opt. with (d) a local analgesic. Compsns. give better absorption of the active components, and are better tolerated than suppositories. Used for treating the usual disorders controlled by antibiotics. Prefd. antibiotics are oxytetracycline and spiramycin in water-sol. form; steroids are betamethasone, dexamethasone or prednisolone in water sol. form such as phosphate or m - sulphobenzoate and suitable analgesics are lignocaine, dibucaine, etc. which reduce the defecation reflex to a minimum and prevent voiding the medicament. A unit dose may contain 400-1500 mg of antibiotic which is pref. mixed with the soln. of the steroid and analgesic just before administration.
