Abstract
A phenol and methanol are brought into contact with a catalyst which is at least one of the following combinations (a) at least one of the oxides MgO, ZnO and BeO with at least one lanthanide oxide, scandium oxide of yttrium oxide, and uranium oxide and/or tin oxides (b) at least one of the oxides of scandium, yttrium and a lanthanide, with tin oxide. (c) uranium oxide or a lanthanide oxide with activated charcoal (lanthanide oxide means oxides of elements with At No. 57-71) 2,6-xylenol, which is used to prepare polyphenylene oxide is a preferred product.
