Abstract

Block copolymer of a vinyl-substd. aromatic hydrocarbon and a conjugated diene is characterised by a three-block structure with an elastomeric copolymeric central block of the conjugated diene and a minor amount of the vinyl-substd. aromatic hydrocarbon, the frequency of the structural units formed by the conjugated diene decreasing from the middle of the central block towards the ends thereof, and further characterised by two terminal homopolymeric blocks of the vinyl-substd., aromatic hydrocarbon. Preparation is by one-step "living" polymerisation with the aid of a reaction product of Li with a non-condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, reaction being effected in a polar medium.
