Abstract

The fraction is produced by (a) distilling a petroleum fraction of boiling range 0-200 degrees C to obtain a fraction of boiling range 10-80 degrees C contg. piperylene and isoprene, (b) re-distilling the fraction to obtain piperylene and isoprene concentrates, (c) heating the piperylene concentrate to 120-250 degrees C. The product of stage (c) may be distilled to a fraction of boiling range 80-87 degrees C/50mm. Hg. contg. at least 50 wt.% of 2-propene-1-yl-norborn-5-ene. The hydrocarbon comonomer is low in cost and gives equivalent performance in elastomers to pure comonomers.
