Abstract

spiro- Di-benzo (a,d)cyclopheptadi (or tri)-ene-5:1' dioxolan (1,3) (where Z = -CH2-CH- or -CH=CH-; R, R1 = 1-3C alkyl or together with the N atom form a pyrrolidino, piperidino, hexamethyleneimino or morpholino ring) are prepared by condensing epibromohydrin with dibenzo(a,d)cycloheptade (or tri)enone in the presence of SnCl4 in CCl4 or CHCl3 to give the 4'-bromomethyl spiro deriv. and then condensing this with a secondary amine to form title cpds. The cpds. have analgesic, sedative, antihistaminic, anti-serotonin, anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsant, anti-depressive, spasmolytic, bronchodilator and hypotensive activity.
